'Work or lose home' says the minister Ghelbi Bunkhaila

hi, i have written a news report on the minister, caroline flint and the idea of "something for something"

The new council minister Caroline flint has suggested that people living in council flats that do not work should not have the right to live there. Unless they get jobs they could get chucked out of their homes.

Caroline flint suggested that new people that are applying for the social housing should be given commitment contracts.

This scheme will not be applied at the people who suffer from illnesses or are disabled and unable to work.

Grant Shapps shadow housing minister said that the idea is pointless as it could not be enforced legally.

Half of the council houses that are paid with benefits, the people living in them are without work. Reports published last February showed that many of those without jobs are under the age of 25.

On Tuesday Caroline flint will discuss the issue in a speech. It is thought that she hopes to start a debate on a “something for something” culture.

Caroline told the guardian "It would be a big change of culture from the time when the council handed someone the keys and forgot about them for 30 years.

"The question we should ask of new tenants is what commitment they will make to improve their skills, find work and take the support that is available."

“Living in an area where there is a concentration of unemployment can be a deterrent to finding work”, she said.

The new commitment contracts would at first only apply to the new housing tenants but could later be changed to apply to already existing tenants. More places to work can be made to try to stop joblessness if there is no where else to work.

Gran Shapps is trying to grab the headlines so that the idea cannot be legally enforced.
