Glasgow’s level of crime and gangs was very little compared to London, but in these recent years the levels have reached the same, by usage of drugs and alcohol. It is proved that there are now a number of 170 gangs in Glasgow, which is adding up to the same amount as in London. This is unexpected as the cities population is a sixth less than London.
The amount of gangs is all so affecting the cities education, and now they have the second worse exam results in Scotland. And causing social problems around Glasgow with other cities in the UK.
The leader of the Glasgow city council Steven Purcell said: “It's well-documented that Glasgow still has a major challenge in terms of our long-standing and deep-rooted social problems.”
The Glasgow council are now focussing on trying to improve health problems around the city and unemployment for children leaving school, and adults.
The education of Glasgow has improved. Ten years ago 40% of students left school and went on to being unemployed, and now in 2008 the levels have gone up to 10% in the east ends.
Glasgow is slowly and steadily improving its standards of learning, but gangs are still bad, and affecting the city. Hopefully in years to come Glasgow’s standards will reach the way they were before.
